The median nerve is a supplier of sensory fibres and power to the hand. It runs within the small narrow tunnel in the wrist called the couple tunnel, and is subjected to compression, affecting typists, and made worse in pregnancy. An ultrasound guided injection prevents accidental injection of the nerve- allowing pain relief medications to be administered around the nerve.
When the finger is stuck in a bent position and cannot be straightened without the help of the extra hand, trigger finger. It is worse in the morning, or after a period of immobilisation and occurs when the tendon sheath if thickened at a particular spot in the finger. The first step to relieve is an ultrasound guided injection into the tendon sheath to provide pain relief, anti-inflammatories and act as a lubricant.
If you are trying to make a thumbs up sign and it hurts, that’s De Quervains’ tenosynovitis. It is a common tendon irritation of the extensor tendon. Similar to trigger finger (which affects the flexor tendons, De Quervains affects the extensor tendons)- image guided injection around the tendon is a safe treatment option.
