Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee has many faces- from large osteophytes, to recurrent joint swelling and fluid. The endpoint is pain and restriction of mobility. We assess OA with a combination of X-ray and MRI (for soft tissue evaluation), and can reduce OA symptoms with injections of hyaluronic acid, painkillers (with and without joint steroids) as well as radiofrequency ablation of the geniculate nerves.
A Baker’s cyst arises when fluid from the knee joint leaks into the back of the knee between semimembranosus and medial gastrocnemius tendons. This results in bulging at the back of the knee, causing difficulty in bending the joint. Simple ultrasound guided aspiration of the cyst and injection with local anaesthetic can provide relief. The cyst may return when effusion accumulates, but this can be re-aspirated if needed. Ultrasound guided procedures do not interfere with surgery or medical treatments.
