Impingement of the soft tissues of the hip joint is common, and is located in the groin area. It is worse when crossing legs. The cause is due to slight bony overgrowths at the femoral head or the acetabulum, or a combination of both, resulting in tears of the labrum and cartilage lining the hip. For small tears, hip joint injections are both diagnostic and therapeutic.
Bursitis around the hip joint is also related to gluteal tendon irritation (tendinosis). They result in pain and discomfort on the side of the hip (as opposed to deep seated groin pain in impingement. A diagnostic and therapeutic injection to the irritated tissues around the gluteal tendon or tight iliotibial band under imaging guidance can be considered.
